Professionals are likely to operate when staff numbers are low such as during shift changes or at the end of a day, whilst amateurs are more likely to steal at random when the opportunity arises - for example when the store is at its busiest in an attempt to avoid being noticed by staff. There is also the opportunity for staff to steal by not ringing items through the till.
